"Miracle" USSR Pre-Game Speech

"Miracle " starring Kurt Russell was a great hockey movie. I remember watching the game between the USA and Russia in the 1980 Winter Olympics. I thought there was no way the USA could win. Well, there went my prediction.

The speech given by Russell, who portrayed Herb Brooks was amazing. It really got my hair standing up.

Thank God for sports and the inspiration that they bring. I do not know if Brooks spoke the exact words that Russell used, but I like to think he did.

This movie is a "must see" for all sports fans and all motivation seekers out there.

"Great moments... are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it." - Kurt Russell playing Herb Brooks in "Miracle."

One of my favorites. Great pick. I use this movie in my Cold War unit. The kids love the movie and it is a great depiction of the angst of the time period for we Americans. I remember dancing in my front yard with my son in the snow with all our neighbors. It certainly was an exhilarating time.

Law and Order Teacher: My Lovely Bride and I visited Lake Placid a few years back and got to go into the rink. I had to touch the ice and even found a puck on the ice. It WAS cool (in more ways than one.

This is the best sports speech... we have an event at school where we made shirts and of course ours say "9 times out of ten they may win, but NOT TONIGHT!"

I think an overlooked element of this incredible speech is that he talks almost entirely in the present tense. To my way of thinking the effect is that this arrests the listener's attention, captures the listeners imagination, and conveys Brooks' absolute conviction in what he is saying.
