Gerry Rafferty: Baker Street

Some of my favorite fellow bloggers and I occasionally dedicate posts to songs and videos from our youth. Below is a clip of Gerry Rafferty singing his some "Baker Street."

It is one of those songs one cannot help but think about the past. I can remember driving my car and when this song would come you MUST sing along.

Sit back and enjoy the song. See if it does not take you back to a simpler, more innocent time.

Windin' your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day
You'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold.
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taken you so long
To find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything

You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin'
You're tryin' now
Another year and then you'll be happy
Just one more year and then you'll be happy
But you're cryin'
You're cryin' now

Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything

He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down in some quiet little town
And forget about everything

But you know he'll always keep movin'
You know he's never gonna stop movin
Cause he's rollin'
He's the rollin' stone

And when you wake up it's a new mornin'
The sun is shinin' it's a new mornin'
You're goin'
You're goin' on.

Ah, from the summer of 1978 (I was six at the time!).

Seriously, though. Unlike my students, I actually appreciate music from other time periods, and "Baker Street" has been and probably always will be my favorite song from the 1970s. Of course, that might be because it sounds like it could be from the early 1980s. It has a definite Hall and Oates ring to it.

Well done. I love this song. I haven't heard of thought of it for a long time. Dang, I need to listen to some music tonight. TT, is the man!
