The Hispanic Tradition of Quinceanera

The Houston Chronicle had an article in their Saturday paper about the Hispanic "ceremony" called a quinceanera. Please click on the title of this post to be taken to the article. What made me want to comment on this was a passing observation I made this evening.

Earlier this evening, my lovely spouse and I were sitting in a park pavilion by the bay near Houston, watching the boats and sunset, having a small evening picnic, and listen to the UT-Rice football game on the radio. In the activity center building next to the park, people were putting the final touches on a quinceanera. We were commenting on it and thought about the article that was in today's Chronicle.

After we left, I decided to reread the article and post my thoughts on it. So here I go. Please feel free to leave your comments, as usual.

The idea of spending even $5000 to have a "coming out party" is totally ridiculous, no matter what culture and race is involved. Some of these families don't even have that kind of money to spend, so they have relatives pitch in to help. I would be willing to bet that some of these people are on public assistance, food stamps, or free lunch in school. It is amazing that some families can find the money to put on a "coming out" party for their little "princess" but don't have enough money for the necessities of life.

I have no problem with families hosting parties for their daughters' fifteenth birthday, but the amount of time and money spend on these "displays of their daughters" is crazy, as it is for any coming out party, regardless of race, culture, etc. It is nothing more than trying to show off, to act like something or someone you are not, and trying to keep up with the family down the street. If some took that money and invested in something that might bring a better life to their families in the future, like an education, perhaps people would not look down on them and their culture so much.

I have many friends who see it the same way I do. Invest in the things that are truly important in life and raise your family to the next level in society.

To quote a sidebar of the article: "A traditional quinceañera includes a religious ceremony followed by a reception. Certain elements of the quince, as the ceremony is often called, have remained largely untouched - the ball gown and tiara, the presentation of her last doll, a Bible, the bridesmaid-like damas and chamberlains."

If this "celebration" is such a religious ceremony, then why are young boys hired to dance and flirt with the girls?

O.J. Simpson Arrested in Las Vegas

O.J. Simpson was arrested today in connection with an alleged armed robbery at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The case involves sports memorabilia items taken from a room in the hotel, items that Simpson says belonged to him. Police have seized two firearms they believe were used in the case.

O.J. is a criminal. He always has been. If you look at his record of past encounters with the law, it does make one think.

HELL...I don't need to think about it. He is a CRIMINAL! Throw his butt in prison and never let him out.

July 4, 2005: A neighbor who went to Simpson's suburban Miami home to help jump-start his girlfriend's car ended up calling police to report a fight. Police showed up but no charges were filed.

March 8, 2004: Satellite television network DirecTV Inc. accused Simpson in Miami federal court of using illegal electronic devices to pirate its broadcast signals. The El Segundo, Calif.-based company later won a $25,000 judgment and Simpson was ordered pay $33,678 in attorneys' fees and costs.

Jan. 18, 2003: Police said they arrived at Simpson's Florida home after his teenage daughter placed an emotional 911 call after an argument with her father. Sydney Simpson, then 17, was crying when she asked police to assist in what she termed ``an abuse thing.'' When they arrived, the teen said she and her father got into an argument over family issues. No charges were filed.

Nov. 22, 2002: Simpson paid a $130 fine for speeding through a Florida manatee zone in a 30-foot powerboat on the Fourth of July. An arrest warrant was briefly issued.

Oct. 24, 2001: Simpson was cleared of all charges in a Florida case involving an alleged road-rage incident.

Oct. 3, 1995: Acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, Simpson was later found liable for their deaths in a civil case and ordered to pay $33.5 million.

Red Skelton's Pledge of Allegiance

I was recently on Marvin's Word. It is one of the blogs that I regularly read and is linked to from this blog. He had a post showing Red Skelton's "Pledge of Allegiance." It was first introduced on the Red Skelton Show on January 14, 1969 and has since been twice read into the congressional record of The United States. Since its initial broadcast, it has received numerous awards.



I want to thank Marvin's Word for reintroducing me to this clip. I remember seeing it sometime in my past, but I cannot recall when. In the high school classes I teach, everyone stands but most do not recite the pledge. That bothers me. The liberals have made it possible for a person to live in this country and not require ANY respect or allegiance whatsoever to the country that is providing the opportunities to learn, earn, and obtain the things that they have and desire. I would love to give them a lecture about respect for the flag and our country, but I would be called on the carpet for not being tolerant and understanding. My belief is that if you cannot pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States, you need to leave and go back to whatever "hell hole" country you or your family came from.

To quote George C. Scott in the movie "Patton,"

Democrats to Debate on Univision

For the first time in a United States presidential campaign, candidates vying for the Democratic nomination will take part in a debate Sunday (tonight) that will be broadcast across the United States in Spanish.

Univision news anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, both of whom are fluent in English, will ask their questions in Spanish. The candidates will respond in English, with their answers translated into Spanish. Viewers who want to hear the forum in English can watch it using the closed caption service on their TV.

The debate in being done on a Spanish language network with the questions in Spanish and the answers in English.

My question is why are the candidates not answering in Spanish? If they want and need the Hispanic votes, why do they not answer in Spanish? Perhaps it is because they do not know Spanish.

NEWS FLASH: President Bush DOES speak Spanish. Imagine that, the President whom they don't like speaks Spanish and the candidates they support don't speak Spanish?

This is some food for thought.

Patton's Opening Speech Updated for War on Terror

I was surfing late tonight looking for something interesting to blog. While surfing videos on YouTube I came across the clip below. It is a copy of George C. Scott's opening speech in the movie "Patton" updated to current time concerning the War on Terror.

It is a bit over eight minutes long but I found it to be very motivating. It is a shame I cannot show it to my classes. The administration and left wing crazies would go nuts and I might be looking for a new job if I did.

Clinton Donor a Fugitive From the Law

Norman Hsu, a major donor to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, was recently outed as a fugitive from the law and has been wanted by authorities, for fraud, for 15 years.

I wonder how many other Clinton supporters have a dubious past? If Hillary cannot keep track of their supporter and their money, how can she be expected to run the country? All of you out there know the answer to that question.

SHE CAN'T!!!

Former President Bill Clinton said he was "shocked" by revelations that a top fundraiser for his wife is a fugitive from justice and claimed he didn't even know what "HillRaiser" Norman Hsu did for a living.

"You could have knocked me over with a straw, especially when I heard the L.A. people had been allegedly looking for him for 15 years when he was in plain view," he told Newsday while touring a county fair in rural New Hampshire Sunday.

"I never knew how he made a living or anything, but I was shocked," said Clinton of Hsu, who has made millions as an investor in tetxtile and other businesses.

Hsu has been a fugitive after being accused of fraud in the early 1990s in San Mateo, Calif.
Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Hillary Clinton donated $23,000 in Hsu contributions after his criminal history was revealed by the Los Angeles Times last week.

Clinton said it wasn't necessary to return $100,000 or more collected by Hsu from other donors.

"I think she did the right thing giving the money back pending resolution of his case," Clinton added. "If the other people say they gave the money of their own accord then I think she should keep it."

Trial of Former TSU President Nears

As the trial for former Texas Southern University President Priscilla Slade starts this week, observers expect a fight that is more contentious than the paper-heavy trial of her chief financial officer who was convicted of criminal financial mismanagement as part of the same investigation.

It is obvious to me, from her demeanor, comments, and appearance, that she felt she was just a bit better than everyone else and she could pretty much do anything she wanted. I have seen it repeatedly from administrators and people of power. Look over the years the trouble and scandal that has come out of TSU?

It is obvious to me that the authorities at TSU cannot run the university and what little they do accomplish is more of a benefit to themselves instead of the students and the community.

Slade needs to be tried, and if found guilty (a highly probable occurrence) should do hard time in prison. Then the state needs to take over the university and place it under their own system. Since when in this day and age do we need a rouge university with self indulgent administrators.

Dean Hits Antigua; Heads for Texas?

I just found this clip of Hurricane Dean hitting Antigua. Some projections have it hitting Texas by mid-week. I don't wish tragedy on anyone, but it needs to go south up the upper Texas coast...WAY SOUTH!!!

Elvis Presley Died 30 Years Ago Today

Thirty years ago today, Elvis Presley died. Much has been written in the past and posted today in various forums, concerning Elvis, his life, his death and all the issues that go with them.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news that Elvis had died. I was at work and it came over the radio. It did not mean as much then as it does now, but it was a classic example of how one views an event over the passage of time.

At the time, I listened to his music but was not as "into" it as I was Chicago, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and Iron Butterfly.

As I got older, I found myself drawn back to the music of Elvis and his movies. Good clean entertainment that is so rare today.

Yes, I know he died from a drug overdose, but I still liked his music and films.

I guess that might make me a hypocrite because of my views about drugs. However, I am human and I like how his music and film did and still does make me feel.

It takes me back to simpler time when things such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness meant something in society.

I wonder how Elvis would view all the problems we are dealing with in the year 2007?

I have a feeling of how he would view all of this, and will reserve it for a future post.

For know, I am sitting back and watching the Elvis marathon on Turner Classic Movies. After all, that is what I am doing and I am enjoying every minute of it.

Sean Hannity Freedom Concert in Grand Prairie

Texas Truth, along with my lovely spouse, attended the Sean Hannity Freedom Concert on Tuesday night (August 14) in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The concert was held at the NOKIA Theatre at Grand Prairie. Guests included Mark Levin, Ollie North, Newt Gingrich, Texas Governor Rick Perry, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Mitt Romney. Music performers were MontgomeryGentry, Collin Raye and Lee Greenwood.

I will post more about the concert in the coming days, along with photos. In a brief comment, it was a very inspirational and positive experience. The only negative I can remember were our seats. We were in the "nose bleed" section. The sound was good, but next time, I will splurge for the higher priced tickets so we can sit on the floor.

End of the Summer

I am sorry for not posting anything lately. I have been preparing for the fall with inservice starting on Friday.

The summer has gone so fast, and as school nears, I find less and less time to post. Hopefully I will be able to post some quality thoughts soon.

Bonds Ties Hank Aaron's MLB Home Run Record

I found this post on a blog titled Freedom Eden. I think is sums up how I feel about the issue.

With a short swing and a strong shot for all the doubters, Barry Bonds* (asterisk mine) caught Hank Aaron and tied the career home run record Saturday night.

No. 755 was an opposite-field drive to left-center, moving Bonds* (asterisk mine) within one swing of having baseball's pinnacle of power all to himself.

It was a long time coming.Commissioner Bud Selig stood up and put his hands in his pockets while Bonds' family hugged and high-fived. When Bonds* (asterisk mine) crossed the plate, he lifted his batboy son, Nikolai, and carried him several steps in an embrace.

The Petco Park crowd stood and cheered, with some boos mixed in, when the San Francisco slugger homered off Clay Hensley in the second inning. Several fans held up asterisk signs. Bonds* (asterisk mine) was booed as he headed to left field at the end of the inning.

The 43-year-old star has been shadowed by suspicions of steroid use for several years, which some fans feel has tainted his chase for the home run record. Bonds* (asterisk mine) did it, and Bud Selig was there. According to this AP account, Selig stood but didn't applaud.

As I've said before, I think it was right for Selig to be there to witness what happened to Major League Baseball on his watch.

He was there when the monster he helped to create tied baseball hero Hank Aaron's record.Selig stood and took in the disgrace that he allowed to swallow up the game.

I hope he's there to watch every wretched moment when Bonds* actually breaks Aaron's record. He should be there to watch Bonds* round the bases and render MLB's home run record worthless.

Look at this disgusting MLB site. It makes me sick.

In summery, Bonds is a cheater. Bud Selig ignored the problem and has to live with it. As far as I am concerned, Hank Aaron is the REAL home run record holder.

Yes, I have read "Game of Shadows." Some will say everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Yes I agree with that. However, facts are facts. Bonds DID use steroids and even if their use was not against MLB rules, they were against the law.

If he was innocent of all charges, why is Greg Anderson sitting in jail? Why will Anderson not answer questions pertaining to Bonds.

The following was taken from Wikipedia concerning the Greg Anderson-Barry Bonds case.

On July 5, 2006, Anderson was found in contempt of court by U.D. District Judge William Alsup for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating perjury accusations against San Francisco Giants' player Barry Bonds.

Bonds appeared before a grand jury investigating the BALCO steroids case in December 2003 and is reported to have denied knowingly using performance enhancing drugs. Anderson, denied bail, was immediately sent to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin California. Anderson's attorney, Mark Geragos, said he would file an appeal based on his assertion that the subpoena to testify violated Anderson's plea bargain agreement in the BALCO case.

On July 20, 2006, Anderson was released when the grand jury's term expired without indicting Bonds. However, Anderson was immediately subpoenaed to testify before a new grand jury that will took up the case. Anderson's attorney, Mark Geragos, stated that Anderson will still refuse to testify, and on August 28, Anderson was again found in contempt of court and sentenced to prison.

The bottom line is that Bonds cheated to get the record, committed a crime when he was involved with steroids, and committed perjury in front of the grand jury.

If his records are not stricken, they should at least have a asterisk place beside them. After all, Roger Maris' record has an asterisk and he didn't cheat or do anything illegal.

I Am Back After A Short Break (and little motivation)

As some of you have noticed, I have not been blogging lately. I just couldn't find anything to blog about. Perhaps it was the long days of summer. It could have been that I just didn't feel like writing. I don't really know what kept me from this forum. I know that I didn't have the desire or interest to sit down and put my thoughts down.

Anyway, I am posting now. I will try to keep it up, but with summer coming to a close and the beginning of year 30 in the classroom approaching, I find myself, at times, not in the mood to blog.

If the lack of motivation grabs me again, please understand. I will post went I can. I do appreciate everyone who reads my posts and takes the time to leave a comment.

Hillary and Obama to Unite?

While surfing the web yesterday afternoon, I came across an article by Anna Quindlen in the current issue of Newsweek online.

It states that Hillary Clinton might think about Barrack Obama for her running mate. That decision would bring her a wider base of support and make history on numerous fronts.

I have surmised the same thing. I believe that if Hillary gets the Democratic nomination for President, she will select Obama as her running mate.

That is a scary thought. Hillary and Obama (and Bill) running the country. I have stated in a previous post what might happen if Hillary is elected. I have thought further on the matter and came up with these other ideas:

1. If Hillary is elected President, it will come out that she is or has been a lesbian and/or bisexual. This will be her attempt to legitimize the gay and lesbian faction in the USA.

2. Obama will announce that he is indeed Muslim or at least bases many of his believes on Muslin teachings and Sharia law.

3. Obama will play the race card and announcer that he is 100% black and not of mixed race.

4. Bill Clinton will be given a very political position outside the immediate USA government (i.e.: UN Ambassador, traveling diplomat, or mediator similar to Jimmy Carter's role in the world).

5. All hell will break lose on the republicans. Investigations, charges, and indictments on any and all those whom have a conservative agenda will occur in order to further the democratic (or should I say socialist) views of the powers in control.

6. Hillary and her cronies will introduce legislation to repeal the 22nd amendment to allow a President to serve more than two terms. That way Bill Clinton could run again and after her eight years and have another eight years in the White House. The funny thing is there are many people out there that would support that.

Why do I think these things will happen? I think Hillary, Obama, (and Bill) will try to all things to all people. They will attempt to consolidate their support base to include as many "diverse" groups as possible to solidify their power.

Being all things to all people will insure, at least in their minds, their continued power base and allow them and theirs to remain in power for many years to come.

The election of Hillary and Obama would be eight years of which the United States would never recover, Yes, I said eight years. If Hillary is elected, she will be a two term President.

This county will be headed down a road from which we will never recover. This country will never be the same during and after their term of office. We will be no better than a third world country, and the rest of the world will fall further and further behind us. Before we know it, the world will be a very unpleasant place to life. At that point, there will nothing that anyone will be able to do.

Results of Latest Texas Truth Poll

In our current poll, Texas Truth ask its readers to vote for, in their opinion, the person that had the best chance to win the Republican nomination for President in 2008.

Fred Thompson was the overwhelming winner, amassing 48 % of the votes. Tom Tancredo and Rudy Giuliani tied for second with 18 %. Sam Brownback, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, and Ron Paul all tallied 4 %. Mitt Romney, Tommy Thompson and “None of the above” did not receive any votes.

There you have it. The readers of Texas Truth Blog have spoken. 46 % of you feel Fred Thompson has the best chance of securing the Republican nomination for President in 2008.

Life Earth! What I Think Right Now?

Life Earth has come (and gone, I guess) on this, the first full weekend in July.

I really don't know what to think of it, so I am reserving comment until more comes out about it.

The only thing I can say at this point is about Al Gore being involved. I really don't trust him. I never have.

When he started with the global warming stuff, I was doubtful of his true intentions. I am still of that opinion.

He claims to want to stop global warming, but from what I have read, many knowledgeable people in the field disagree with him.

I know he is pulling a fast one on everybody, but I wonder what his true motives are?

Could he be seeking a possible nomination for President? I feel that idea is hovering in the back of his mind. I also believe that a Nobel Prize may be another "goal" he would like to achieve.

It would be interesting to see how history portrays him and global warming in 100 years. Yes, that would be very interesting.

As for now, I will reserve comment on hisLive Earth concerts. I will reserve comment for now, but I will be pondering what I need to post on this matter.

Clintons Push for Another Four Years

In an article posted on breitbart.com during an appearance by Bill and Hillary Clinton in Iowa City, Iowa, it was implicated that if Hillary is elected, it will amount to a third term in the White House.

The force dubbed "Billary"—the duo of former President Clinton and his leading Democratic candidate wife—argued on Tuesday for a third term in the White House, telling Iowa voters a return to the Clinton years is the best remedy for the Bush era.

This bothers me on numerous levels. If she is elected, it will end up being a co-Presidency, will Bill having as much input in the government as Hillary had when he was President.

First off, the terrorism by Islamic extremists will get worse. The terrorists do not respect woman. Examine how they treat their our women.

She will be seen as weak and as much of a pushover, if not more than her husband.

We will see her extreme liberal agenda pushed on this country in ways that have never been seen before.

Illegal immigration will run rampant, with public funds being used to support the unwashed masses who refuse to take responsibility for their lives.

Mark my words, if Hillary is elected, she will be a two term President. As a result, this country will plunge into an abyss from which we will never recover.

Terrorism will increase. Taxes will go up. Military spending will go down. Social services will increase. The United States will have a two tier social strata; the rich and the poor. The educated and the uneducated. The dependent and the independent. The middle class as we know it will be gone in 30 years.

Looking back on history, whenever there has been a Democrat (or liberal) in the White House, we have had trouble. Sure, a Republican (or conservative) President has not been perfect, but it has always been better.

Imagine if John Kerry or Al Gore had been in office the past seven years. Look at the mess we would have been in.

Has President Bush done everything like I would like? NO, he hasn't.

Has he done better than Kerry or Gore would have? YES, he has.

I shudder when I think about Hillary running this country. It will be a very dark time in our history. A very dark time indeed.

Rosie O'Donnell: Loser To The Nth Degree

Rosie O'Donnell is a sick, sick evil woman. The photo to the right was posted to her blog.

She said her kids were just playing and she felt it was art.

This is sick! The bad thing is it is acceptable by liberal standards.

She doesn’t believe in guns, yet her bodyguard has carries a gun.

She doesn't believe in the war, yet has Army toys around the house for her kids to play with.

She is using her children to further political and lifestyle choices. That child's eyes are lifeless. They have no emotion.

Rosie said her kids were just playing she shot photos of what she saw.

Yeah....Right....So she says. That photo was staged... No doubt about it.

She is such a loser. This is an exact reason why a child needs a MOTHER and a FATHER, not two mothers.

Rosie is such an evil loser. She will do anything to keep her name in the spotlight, and the great unwashed, uneducated masses line up to follow her.

This photo is going to come back to haunt her in the future. Mark my words!!!

Joseph Frederick said he was not advocating drug use when he raised his banner at the 2002 Winter Olympics Torch Run.

Yeah, right!!!

Frederick, now 23, who has been teaching and studying in China, pleaded guilty in 2004 to a misdemeanor charge of selling marijuana at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, according to court records.

He later said had to drop out of college after his father lost his job. The elder Frederick, who worked for the company that insures the Juneau schools, was fired in connection with his son's legal fight.

This guy was and is a jerk. I wonder if his school in China knows he is a convicted drug dealer?

"Bong Hits 4 Jesus" Slapped Down By U.S. Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruled against a former high school student Monday in the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner case.

The justices' came to a split decision that limits students' free speech rights.

I had posted to this blog about this specific incident on March 19.

It is good to see the Supreme Count uphold the school's decision in that matter.

The student who displayed the sign was acting like a little jerk when he did and and tried to milk it by going to court over it.

I am glad he got himself slapped down over it. I figured the school had the authority to act, but sometimes the school's right in such matters are often overlooked in the guise of "political correctness" and "permissiveness."

Kudos to the Supreme Court for their 5-3 decision. I will post which justices rules in which way as soon as I can research it.

Obama and Religion

Sen. Barack Obama told a church convention Saturday that some right-wing evangelical leaders have exploited and politicized religious beliefs in an effort to sow division.

"Somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked," the Democratic presidential candidate said in remarks prepared for delivery before the national meeting of the United Church of Christ.

I have been thinking about Obama's religious leanings lately. I would be willing to bet if he does achieve higher office (President, Vice President, or anything else) it is going to be announced that he is Muslim or that some of his beliefs are based on Muslim principles.

I just have a feeling!!!

Among those arrested in the raids Southern California this week were two hardened criminals.

The sweeps in Orange County, south of Los Angeles arrested Almarez Reveles Gonzalo, 35, wanted in Mexico for the murder of his 74-year-old uncle. He was turned over to Mexican authorities.

Also arrested was Jamie Pena-Martinez, 30, a Mexican national previously convicted of child molestation who was ordered deported.

Scores Arrested in California Immigration Raids

Hundereds of illegal immigrants, including a man wanted for murder and a convicted child molester, were arrested in Southern California raids this week.

The sweeps in Orange County, south of Los Angeles, were part of an operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement targeting "criminal aliens" defined as people in the country illegally who have also committed other crimes.

As I have said, the government CAN find these criminals if they want to.

Perhaps they should be sent to Sheriff Joe Arpiro's jail in Maricopa County Arizona.

I know he would make them want to go Most of those arrested to Mexico,India, Kenya, the Philippines and Columbia.

Of the 175 arrested, ICE said, 100 had already been deported.

Andrew Riley Pleads Guilty, Is Sentenced

In my mind, the punishment was not severe enough to fit the crimes.

Oh well, anyone want to lay odds that Andrew will mess up and be placed in the juvenile detention center.

Judge Robert Stewart ruled that Andrew Riley be admitted to the Hocking Valley Community Residential Center in Nelsonville, write letters of apology to the victims of his crimes, pay restitution totaling more than $1,140 and remain on probation until the age of 21.

HVCRC serves as a type of “halfway house,” where juveniles are given training, education and counseling for rehabilitation, according to county Prosecutor C. David Warren. The program runs for six months and serves as an alternative to a juvenile detention center.

If Riley fails to complete any of the court’s orders, he could be placed in a juvenile detention center.
