More News on Teenage Thug Andrew Riley
I will keep looking for information on this future star of "America's Most Wanted."
The alleged accomplice and younger half-brother of Nelsonville teenager Andrew Riley admitted guilt today to charges related to Riley’s crimes.
Riley, 13, pleaded guilty in April to 23 counts of theft, burglary and other crimes in a case that received national media attention.
The alleged accomplice, 14-year-old Jeffrey Mehl of Nelsonville, admitted guilt to all but two counts against him in Athens County Juvenile Court, including theft of goods from a car, taking money from two businesses and receiving stolen property — all related to Riley’s crimes — as well as chronic truancy.
Mehl contested two counts of theft, for which another hearing will occur.
Miki Brooks, owner of FullBrooks Café in Nelsonville, where the teen admittedly stole money from a cash register, said Mehl needed to realize that real people were affected as a result of his actions.
Tracie Mcintosh, whose car Mehl broke into, told him there was still hope for him to change his ways.
Athens County Juvenile Court Judge Robert Stewart ended the proceedings before disposition, the sentencing process for juveniles.
Stewart also presided yesterday at a hearing in which Riley’s 12-year-old half brother admitted to receiving stolen property and was ordered to a diversion program.
The 12-year-old said he took $10 from Riley and Mehl in March of 2006 to “keep quiet” after learning the pair had robbed FullBrooks Café. One charge of felony vandalism and one charge of felony burglary were dropped in a plea bargain read by Athens County Assistant Prosecutor Keller Blackburn.
The proceedings took an interesting twist when the juvenile was asked to retell his story and it differed from the original account told to Blackburn and defense counsel Aaron Miller. Stewart issued a short recess, during which the parties agreed on a sequence of events.
By assigning the 12-year-old to a diversion program, Stewart declined to enter a finding of delinquency. If the juvenile does not successfully complete the diversion program, a finding of delinquency could be handed down at another date, Stewart said.
Blackburn protested to the ruling, citing that the 12-year-old had already gone through the diversion program in 2004 when charged with arson, but Stewart stood by his decision.
Blackburn also requested the juvenile pay restitution and write a letter of apology to FullBrooks Café, an order that mirrors Riley’s sentence. Stewart turned down both suggestions, citing that restitution should be sought from those directly involved in the crime.

Federal Judge Blocks Anti-Illegal Immigrant Ordinance
A federal judge has stopped enforcement of a voter-approved ban prohibiting apartment rentals to illegal immigrants in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch until a ruling is reached in the case. This exact case had been discussed on the blog on the past. The ordinance would have required apartment managers to verify that renters are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants before leasing to them, with a few exceptions.

No Child Left Behind Doesn't Work
Testing, testing, and more testing. Before that come review, review, and more review.
Those of us on the front line of education have another phrase for it. If you asked anyone involved with education, they will know this phrase.
It is called "teaching the test."
Too much time is spent preparing for these mandated tests. As a result, less time is spent teaching material that a student might actually need and use in their lives.
As I stated earlier in this post, Hillary and I agree on this fact. However, that is a far as the agreement goes.
She says "No Child Left Behind" and its emphasis on testing puts American students in danger of losing their creative edge.
"I think that we are in danger of narrowing the curriculum and leaving children behind. That's the very opposite of what they said would happen."
Loss of creativity. That is the first time I have heard that.

Pass The Students, AT ALL COSTS
In my school, we have an "unofficial" rule that no more than 10% of the students under your direction can fail.
If they do, the teacher will get called in and asked what they are doing to raise the passing rate.
I guess we ARE preparing them for the future. A future of poverty and little success.

Space Shuttle Launch Set For Friday
The space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled for a 6:38 pm CDT launch on Friday.I have always wanted to attend a launch. Seeing the shuttle blasting into space has to be one of the most incredible sights in the world.
That is one for the things I have on my list to do before I die.
Hopefully I will be able to do it someday.
William Jerrerson INDICTED

The charges stem from a long-running bribery probe surrounding Jefferson's business dealings in Africa. Jefferson is accused of soliciting bribes for himself and his family, and also for bribing a Nigerian official, the Associated Press reported.
The probe made headlines in August 2005 when investigators raided Jefferson's Louisiana home and found $90,000 in cash stowed in his freezer in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
I only have one response.
IT IS ABOUT TIME!!!

Round 2: Diplomas Withheld Beacuase Of Cheering
I understand not holding the student responsible for some other person's actions. However, the school's administration foresaw a problem based on past events, and took action.
So many schools take no action because of possible backlash for parents and the community.
It is a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" situation.
I think the students and parents will live through this. Look at what one of the students said. She indicated she would let the school keep the diploma of her appeal was denied.
The sad thing is that the school and the administration will probably cave in to the parents and give them the students their diplomas without any further action.
Schools and administrators don’t want the headaches that go with their decisions. What a shame. If they do indeed cave in, it will open them up for future attacks on their decisions.
Thanks for your posts. I apprecate the readership and your posts being in a civil manner.

Diplomas Withheld Beacuase Of Cheering
About a month before the May 27 ceremony, Galesburg High students and their parents had to sign a contract promising to act in dignified way. Violators were warned they could be denied their diplomas and barred from the after-graduation party.
This is an interesting case, and as I was thinking about posting about a similar incident that I was involved in, I will go ahead and do it now.
I attended a high school graduation ceremony recently. Actually, I was assigned to work, in my duties as a teacher. We had similar cheering and whooping going on as the student's names were announced.. A student would be announced and people would go crazy. Cheering, whistling, and even a few air horns for heard. I believe if you are at a formal occasion, ACT ACCORDINGLY!
Some people in the audience were dressed in working clothes; jeans, t shirts, hats, etc. In respect to others in attendance, I did notice others dressed in proper attire; dresses, coats and ties. I believe if you are a a formal occasion, DRESS ACCORDINGLY!
However, the overall behavior of most of the people in attendance was very inappropriate for a respectful and solemn occasion. This graduation resembled a circus.
I can understand parents and friends getting excited when someone they know graduates. It is an exciting time. In this graduation, those who were creating a spectacle probably were excited that someone in their family actually graduated from high school. That probably will be the high point in their lives.
The fact is that most of these people don't value education and the things that are associated with it. If they did, they would act better.
By the way, the young lady mentioned in the article stated she had a 3.4 GPA. In my school, a 3.4 GPA not as great as one is lead to believe by this article. Since grades are pumped up for honors and advanced courses, it is common for most top graduates to have GPAs over 5.0.
In my view, a 3.4 GPA is the equivalent to a B-C average; hardly representative of an honor student.
Galesburg's assistant superintendent Joel Estes was quoted in saying,
"Lots of parents complained that they could not hear their own child's name called and I think that led us to saying we have to do something about this to restore some dignity and honor to the ceremony so that everyone can appreciate it and enjoy it."
Good for Joel and his administration. We need more decisions like this.

Women Give Birth To Third Pair Of Twins
I saw this story on television on Friday evening. When they did the promo clip, some things came to my mind.
First I though she might have been on some sort of fertility drugs and possibly be an older woman.
After I saw the report and read the article I found out the following facts:
- She always has two sets of twins (ages two and three) and another four year old daughter.
- The woman is only 20 years old. That means she had these children when she was 16, 17 and 18.
- She is unmarried.
- The children were from different fathers.
- She and the father of the current set of twins are both unemployed.
- They both are on welfare.
She was quoted in saying:
"I've always taken care of kids since I was little, I think that's where I got it. When I used to babysit a lot of kids, I wanted to have my own, a lot of kids," she said.
I say: Why are you bringing babies into this world you cannot possibly take of?
The father of the current twins was quoted as:
"Just focus, trying to have my mind right. Try to have my mind right, you know."
Perhaps that focus could have come at an earlier time ion your life. Like school, getting a job, and not bringing children into the world that you cannot possibly support.
Her mother was also quoted about the stress of bringing up seven children.
"I've always talked to her and told her about it, if you ever get depressed that bad, you've got people you can you can talk to, your sister, your brother, her boyfriend."
Notice she didn't mention herself as someone her daughter could talk to. Perhaps if she had talked to her daughter earlier, tehd aughter might not have had so many children.
She needs to have her tubes tied, the children taken, put up for adoption. She is condemning them to the perpetual life of poverty that she, her mother, and the current boyfriend are living in. What a bunch of losers!!!
And they put it on television!! What does one expect!!!!
Our Government's Responsibility
I assume as one gets older, or closer to death that birth as I like to put it, things just come to mind. I cannot believe is has been thirty years since I first walked into a classroom to educate young minds. The time has surely flown.
Frequently, while watch a movie or a television show, I find myself going to the Internet Movie Database to find facts about the show, movie, or actors.
For some reason, tonight I went to the Bruce Willis page on the website and was reading his biography. It stated that he is one of the few Hollywood types who is a Republican. I did know that fact, but he was quoted saying that in addition to his Republican views, he also had some Democratic views.
This statement made me think about what exactly MY views were. I think I know what I believe, but sometimes I tend to see other people's points of view. Their views usually don't change my mind, but I really like to knowing what other people think and what their respective views are. It helps me to see the other point of view. Most of the time I don;t agree, but as I stated earlier, I like knowing what the think.
The role of our government was brought to mind. Exactly what people should the government take care of? That is a question that has been around since our great country was born.
I feel that four groups of people should be taken care of and protected. Whether the government takes the lead or directs other groups to do it, their well being should be ensured. Understand that I mean basic care and that care may not always be in the form of money.
- Children.
- People who cannot physically or mentally take care of themselves.
- The elderly
- The people who have picked up a weapon and defended this country.
In my book, everyone else should get a job and take care of themselves. If they CHOOSE not to, then so be it. They can starve, live under a bridge, or sleep in a storm drain for all I care. They are able bodied enough to care for themselves and should be expected to do so with little, if any help from the government.
I know some will say how much should they be cared for, how should it be done, where will the money or time come from?
That is what I believe. I have shared this list with my high school students as various times in the past years and I am always amazed that most of them agree with me.
As always, I welcome your comments. Perhaps someone out there will change my view on this subject.

John Wayne in "Hellfighters" on AMC
Well, on this Memorial Day weekend, with school out for the summer and the Duke's 100th birthday today, I can't help myself.
He was one of a kind and the kind of man my father was. I always wanted to grow up to be somewhat like them. Some say I did, but I don't see it. Yes, I have some traits of my father and many of the things the Duke stood for I am in line with. However, I just don't think I am the men they were. Some of that is good and some is bad. I will not go into that just now, but rest assure, I wish I could be more like them in some ways.
But, enough with this soliloquy. On with "Hellfighters."
"Hellfighters" is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. Most people don't even rate it as one of his best or favorites.
I just like the movie. Filmed in and around Houston, it shows many locations in the city and surrounding areas.
Things that I do recognize and are authentic are as follows:
- The oil fields around Baytown where the initial oil well fire in the movie occurs. I am still trying to locate the exact location when I travel to Houston.
- The Channel 2 KPRC television truck at this fire.
- The DPS (Department of Public Safety) car that escorts the truck carrying the well head to the fire.
- Cactus Pryor playing the doctor when John Wayne was in the hospital. He was in local television news in Austin in the 1970s and his brother Wally Pryor was the voice of the Memorial Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin during the same time. Cactus Pryor also appeared in "The Green Berets."
- The Hobby Airport entrance before the parking garage was build in front of the terminal. The entrance between the terminal and garage is still pretty much the same.
- The Lomax Oil Building, which I believe was the real Humble Oil Building at the time.
- In the pre-movie credits, Red Adair, Boots Hansen, and Coots Matthews are all listed as technical advisors. They are three worked together in Adair's company. Later, Hansen and Matthews branched off and founded Boots & Coots International Well Control.
- The Buckman Company Building looks like it is located off Pearce Elevated (Interstate Highway 45) just south of Houston proper or on the Southwest Freeway (US Highway 59) between IH 45 and Loop 610 West.

John Wayne's DEATH Movies
Through extensive research and mnay hours of movie viewing, I have come up with the definative list of movies the Duke died in. A brief description of the movie and method of his demise is given.
The Shootist-After winning a seemingly hopeless gunfight with three opponents simultaneously, he is shot in the back by the bartender, played by Charles G. Martin, and is then avenged by Ron Howard's character.
The Cowboys-He is killed by Bruce Dern's character.
The Alamo-Playing Davy Crockett, he is stabbed with a lance, then staggers into the ammunition room with a lit torch and blows it up.
Sands of Iwo Jima-He is killed at the end of the film by a bullet fired by a Japanese sniper.
Wake of the Red Witch-He drowns when the sunken ship he is trying to salvage shifts and drops further into the ocean, carrying him with it.
The Fighting Seabees-He is shot by a sniper as he attempts to dismount from a bulldozer loaded with TNT aimed at a fuel depot.
Reap the Wild Wind-He is trapped inside the wreck of a sunken ship after a fight with a giant squid and drowns.
His character's death is not shown in the following movies:
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance-His character is dead at the beginning of the film and the story is told in flashback by James Stewart, who is attending his funeral.
The Sea Chase-Lana Turner and Wayne are on a ship when it sinks, but the possibility that the characters survived is left open.
The Deceiver-Ian Keith's character died, but the corpse was played by John Wayne.
Central Airport-John Wayne has a very minor role as the co-pilot of an aircraft that crashes into the ocean.

Carter Blasts Bush
Jimmy Carter blasted President George W. Bush and his administration as the “worst in history.”Carter has a great deal of room to talk. He was a one term President who had very little success during his Presidency.
He is just a bitter old man who has nothing better to do than try to keep his name in the public eye.
In fact, the comments came why he was promoting this new audiobook series “Sunday Morning in Plains,” which is a collection of weekly Bible lessons from his hometown of Plains Georgia.
This is from a man who has professed his Christian faith and values for many years.
I guess those values don’t include embracing your fellow man, unless of course than fellow man has exactly the same values as you.
He accomplished very little in his Presidency. As a result, he should keep his negative comments to himself. After all, he couldn’t even deal with the Iran Hostage Crisis.
Remember, his rescue efforts failed and left a good number of American dead. Saying the Bush administration is the worst in history is the pot calling the kettle black.

Five Things One Cannot Say In America
Believe it or not, I have said these things, along with others, in the past. In fact, I was discussing listing number 3 this week with my high school students.
Here are the five things:
1. The U.S. military should be far less concerned about civilian casualties.
2. The United States would be better off if less people voted.
3. Men are better equipped than women to do certain jobs.
4. Racism is not the biggest problem that black Americans face any more.
5. The only practical way to make peace between the Israelis and Palestinians is for the Israelis to transfer the Palestinians and take their land.
Check out the original article. It raises some interesting ideas and does make a person think.

One Down....Many To Go!!!!
Farmers Branch, Texas votes today approved an ordinance, by a 3 to 1, to ban apartment owners from renting to criminal aliens.Opponents plan to file suit to stop the ordinance from taking effect.
The question is how can opponents sue to stop an ordinance that was legally voted on and approved by the legal votes of a city’s residents? I am not a lawyer, by that doesn’t seem possible to me.
It is about time that people are stepping up to the plate and doing something to make communities unappealing to criminals.
YES…..Illegal immigrants ARE CRIMINALS, along with the people who hire them.
Kudos go out to the citizens of Framers Branch. Perhaps many others will follow your lead.
One city down…..many more to go!!!

Today in History: 1972: Israeli Commandos Storm Hijacked Jet
Thirty-five years ago today, Israeli solders stormed an airplane and rescued 100 people being held hostage. Why don't we follow the example of Israel in terms of security and dealing with terrorists?
Below is a clip from an article on the BBC.
Twelve Israeli soldiers disguised as maintenance staff have stormed a hijacked Sabena Boeing at Lod airport in Tel Aviv and released the 100 people on board.
Two of the Arab hijackers were shot dead and their two female companions were captured, although one of them was injured in the attack.
Six of the passengers were also wounded in the gun battle. The 90 passengers and 10 crew had been held hostage for 23 hours.
The end to their ordeal came when two vans, said to be carrying repair men, drove onto the runway and approached the plane.
Two of the men burst into the cockpit and said they were taking over the jet
The men got out and pretended to begin work on the airliner but suddenly climbed onto the wings and opened the emergency doors.
The British pilot, Captain Reginald Levy, said: "Everyone of us is lucky to be alive. I have had some tough times but this was my toughest."
The airliner was hijacked after leaving Vienna, where it had made a stop on a flight from Brussels to Tel Aviv.
Capt Levy said: "Two of the men burst into the cockpit and said they were taking over the jet."
He was ordered to fly the plane to Lod, where the gunmen offered to free the passengers in exchange for 100 Arab prisoners held by the Israelis.
While the plane was sitting on the tarmac, the Israelis managed to let down the tyres and empty the fuel tanks to prevent it taking off again.
Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan took charge of negotiations with the hijackers, initially offering to free the Arab prisoners in return for the release of the hostages.
Later Israeli officials said there was never any intention to release the prisoners. It was simply a delaying tactic.
The gunmen belonged to the Black September Organisation of Palestine guerrillas, a splinter group of the PLO.
One of the rescued passengers, Mor Weiss, from Brooklyn, told The Times: "The soldiers opened the four doors, two on either side at the same time. Immediately the Arabs started shooting wildly.
"The troops fired back and I saw the younger of the two male hijackers fall with a bullet through his forehead. Seconds later the other one was shot."
Mr Weiss said he had been picked on because he was wearing a skull cap. He was sent to the back of the plane and made to sit with a stick of dynamite between his feet.
Captain Levy, who comes from Slough, told a news conference, the drama had happened on his 50th birthday. His wife had accompanied him on the flight so they could have a celebratory birthday meal in Tel Aviv.

Potential Voter Fraud Uncovered In Houston
All the applications were mailed from El Paso and had the address of 2519 Dashwood Drive, which does not exist.
"We know because all the handwriting is the same," Bettencourt was quoted in saying.
"This type of fraud is used specifically against people in general elections," Bettencourt said. "It's used against people in primaries. It's not specific to any political party."
I can only speculate as to who would instigate such a scheme, but I have some ideas.
This is an classic example of why we need to require a photo id to vote in this country. Some groups will do anything to flood the ballot box with fraudulent votes.
It is no wonder that the liberals are against photo identification to vote. It might cut into their number of votes.
"THEY CAN'T DEPORT ALL OF US"
I had just pulled out of a store, after getting myself a soft drink and I saw an old panel truck sitting in a parking lot outside one of the many flea markets in the area.
Painted on the side, with what I figured was a can of black spray paint, was the phrase "You can't deport all of us."
I just shook my head and drove on to my appointment.
"They" just don't get it. We actually COULD deport them all. The fact is that the government won't allow it to happen.
Next time I will keep a camera in my car to take a photo of such nonsense.

Rosie O'Donnell: The Newest Member of the "Dancing Monkey Club"
Rosie O'Donnell needs to just shut her mouth and move on. In fact, she is actually helping the conservatives. When people who have loved ones in the military hear her describe them as "stupid" and "felons," they will turn on her and her views. As I have stated in previous posts and on other blogs I have posted on, this is a classic example of the "Dancing Monkey Syndrome."
Rosie needs to stick to the entertainment world and entertain us like the "little monkey" she is. No one really cares about an enetrtainer's political opinions.
Remember she got her start as a VJ on MTV. That is the same network that brought us "Rock the Vote" and a young woman asking Slick Willie if he wore boxers or briefs.
Here is the clip from "The View" this morning. She is such a hack!!!
O’DONNELL: Wait, can I just say something? Why do people enlist in the Army?
RICKI LAKE: To get an education, and they're poor-
O’DONNELL: Thank you.
LAKE: -and that’s the only way to get one.
O’DONNELL: The vast majority– Yes, Elisabeth. It’s true!
No, it’s not. According to a recent study by the Heritage Foundation, military enlistees are "better educated, wealthier, and more rural on average than their civilian peers." Additionally, "recruits have a higher percentage of high school graduates" and "the distribution of household income of recruits is noticeably higher than the entire youth population." Of course, facts don’t matter to Rosie O’Donnell. After all, fire can’t melt steel.
Token non-liberal Elisabeth Hasselbeck responded harshly and Rosie continued to smear volunteer soldiers before she claimed that she does support the troops.
HASSELBECK: First of all, in the past year, the testing scores of our armed services have been higher than ever, so the education level-
O’DONNELL: You are wrong. We have more convicted felons in the Army because we’re allowing them to get through.
HASSELBECK: So they're awful. They’re awful then.
O’DONNELL: Elisabeth, I do everything I can to support the troops financially and emotionally. I love them as much as you do. I'm as much of a patriot. I want them home.
